Running Debian on the Acer Aspire ES1-522 laptop
July 16, 2017

I recently needed to help install Debian on an Acer Aspire ES1-522 laptop. There were quite a few issues to do with drivers.

The commands to fix the different problems are below. The nonfree section needs to be enabled for the drivers.

  • Fix wifi not turning on: echo blacklist acer-wmi | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-acer-wmi.conf
  • Fix backlight control: sudo sed -i 's/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor/g' /etc/default/grub && sudo update-grub
  • Install graphics drivers: sudo apt install firmware-amd-graphics
  • Install wifi drivers: sudo apt install firmware-atheros
  • Install bluetooth drivers: sudo apt install firmware-realtek
